Worthy causes
Corio contributes to the local communities in which it operates by donating to charities, investing in a secure environment, sponsoring local organisations and providing space in our shopping centres for a range of activities with a social purpose.
Examples
Corio supported the following worthy causes in 2008:
Corio Italia provided support to various private worthy causes in its local area by enabling visitors to the Le Gru shopping centre to donate presents for poor children in Italy. Visitors could also have their photographs taken with Santa Claus in return for voluntary donations. The company also provided support to Unicef, AVIS (the Italian blood donor service), AIDO (organ donations), the Red Cross and ANLAIDS (an aids research organisation) by making space available in its shopping centres for these organisations’ fundraising activities. The business unit also donated funds to a hospital close to the GrandEmilia shopping centre so that it could buy new medical equipment.
Corio España donated 11,000 books to Fundación Valora, an organisation that distributes surplus books on management. Funds were also raised and volunteers found for the Spanish cancer charity AECC and Dona de Mislata, a local emancipation organisation.
The proceeds of Corio’s 2008 Christmas lottery in the Netherlands were given to Stichting KiKa, a children’s cancer charity.
Corio has chosen children’s development as the central theme of its corporate involvement in worthy causes. The group and its employees will contribute, both financially and in the form of knowledge and time, to a good cause of their choice. The preference in this respect is to focus on the development of children in emerging markets, such as Turkey, that are relevant to our business activities. It is up to the individual business units to decide how they want to respond to this theme, but the emphasis will ideally be on local activities and local involvement. It is also possible to combine the provision of space in a shopping centre with the theme of development for children in the form, for example, of education and for adults in the form of greater job opportunities.
